Visiting the University of Delaware: why Elkton is an easy base

By The Elkton Lodge Team 2 min read

Campus tours, move-in weekend, games and graduation. Newark is a short drive from the lodge, and staying just over the state line can make the visit calmer.

Whether you are visiting a prospective college, moving a student into the dorms, cheering at a game or celebrating graduation, a trip to the University of Delaware usually means a lot of planning. One simple way to make it easier is to stay a short drive away in Elkton, Maryland, just across the state line from Newark.

How close is it?

Newark and Elkton are neighbors. The drive from the lodge to the UD campus is short, usually around fifteen minutes depending on traffic and where on campus you are headed. That means you can be on campus for an early tour or move-in slot without a long drive, and head back to a quiet room when the day is done.

Why stay in Elkton?

  • A calmer base. Big university weekends bring crowds to Newark. Staying a few minutes away gives you a little breathing room at the end of a busy day.
  • Free parking. Parking at the lodge is free, which is handy if you are arriving with a car full of boxes, bags and dorm supplies.
  • Easy highway access. The lodge is close to I-95, so families driving in from other states can get off the highway and settle in quickly.
  • A front desk that is always open. Our 24/7 front desk can check you in whenever you arrive, even after a long drive.

Tips for big campus weekends

Move-in, family weekends, home games and commencement are some of the busiest times of the year around Newark. Rooms in the area can fill up early for these dates, so it pays to plan ahead.

  • Book early. As soon as you know your dates, reserve your room. You can usually adjust later if plans change, so check the cancellation terms when you book.
  • Check the university's schedule. UD publishes details for tours, move-in and events on its own website. Confirm times and parking instructions there before you go.
  • Give yourself extra time. Traffic and parking on campus can be slow on big days. Leaving a little earlier than you think you need makes the day calmer.
  • Pack a small day bag. Water, snacks, a phone charger and comfortable shoes make long campus days easier.

More to do nearby

If you have time between campus events, Newark's Main Street has plenty of places to eat and shop, and White Clay Creek State Park is close by for a walk. On the Maryland side, Fair Hill and Elk Neck State Park are good choices for fresh air.
