From the trails at Fair Hill to the shoreline at Elk Neck State Park, Cecil County has plenty to fill a free afternoon or a whole weekend.
Elkton is often thought of as a place to stop on the way to somewhere else. Stay a little longer and you will find that Cecil County has a lot going on: open countryside, state parks on the water, small historic towns and the upper Chesapeake Bay. Here are some easy ideas for a free afternoon or a full weekend.
Fair Hill
A short drive north of town, the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area covers thousands of acres of rolling fields, woods and streams. It is well known in the horse world and hosts equestrian events, and on ordinary days it is a lovely place to walk, ride or simply enjoy the scenery. Trails range from gentle loops to longer routes, so you can choose how much time you want to spend. Check the park's own information before you go, since some areas and events have their own rules.
Elk Neck State Park
Head south toward the bay and you reach Elk Neck State Park, on a peninsula between the North East River and the Elk River. The park has woodland trails, beaches and views across the water. One of its best-known walks leads to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, which stands on a bluff above the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Bring water and comfortable shoes, and plan time to sit and enjoy the view at the end.
Historic Downtown Elkton
Elkton is the county seat of Cecil County, and its Main Street area has older buildings, local shops and places to eat. The town has a long history, including its well-known past as a place where couples came to marry quickly. A stroll downtown is a relaxed way to spend an hour, and it gives you a feel for the town beyond the highway.
The upper Chesapeake Bay
Elkton is close to the top of the Chesapeake Bay, and several small waterfront towns are within an easy drive. North East and Chesapeake City are popular choices, with water views, shops and restaurants. Chesapeake City sits beside the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, where you may see large ships passing through. Warmer months are the busiest time on the water, but the views are worth it in any season.
Just over the line in Delaware
Newark, Delaware, home of the University of Delaware, is a short drive east. Main Street in Newark is lively with shops and places to eat, and White Clay Creek State Park offers more trails for walking and biking.
A few planning tips
- Check opening times, fees and seasonal rules on each park's or business's own website before you go.
- Weekends in warm weather can be busy at the parks, so an early start helps.
- Ask at the front desk if you would like directions or a suggestion for where to start.
